Our Experience
Incident Command System (ICS)
SES UK undertook Incident Command System and oil spill contingency planning work for a major client in the Middle East. The project involved reviewing the individual plans and combining them into a single and comprehensive document. The final part of this project was a complete suite of Incident Command System training for the Incident Management Team, followed by a major exercise.
SES UK has led an extensive programme of ICS training for a major shipping company and, in doing so, has become an important part of the company’s regional emergency response team as a technical advisor to the Incident Commander.
Oil Spill Response Training
SES UK has provided extensive oil spill response training to clients all over the world. An example is the provision of IMO level 1-3 training courses and specialist workshops to MEMAC (Middle East Mutual Aid Centre) in the Arabian Gulf.
In recognition of its high level of oil spill response expertise, SES UK has been contracted to act as in-country technical advisor to a major oil company in Angola. This involves the development and delivery of a training and exercise programme covering HAZWOPER, ICS and oil spill response.
SES UK is accredited by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) for the provision of a range of oil spill and related courses.
Hazardous Material Response Training
SES UK developed and implemented a full HAZWOPER programme for a major oil company, ranging from Level 2 (First Responder Operations) to Level 5 (Incident Commander). This training was translated and delivered in up to four languages to multi-ethnic groups, and supplemented by specialist oil spill response and industrial training.
Numerous hazardous material training courses undertaken by SES UK include a 5-day course for Incident Commanders involving participants from many of the Arabian Gulf states. This course also included nuclear, biological and chemical issues related to terrorism.
Exercise Development & Facilitation
The SES UK team is highly experienced in running major incident exercises, an example of which is a national exercise that was undertaken for one of the Mediterranean countries. The exercise involved the invoking of the National Contingency Plan and mobilisation of the National Incident Management team. A practical deployment was also performed involving at-sea operation of third-party country equipment and a full-scale beach cleaning exercise. SES UK was responsible for the development of the exercise and management of all such activities.
Spill Management Team Services
SES UK has been employed as technical advisors to a major shipping client following the explosion of a chemical tanker in South America. The explosion caused a substantial oil spill and SES UK was called in on behalf of the owners to advise on best practice and monitor expenditure by the clean-up contractors. The role involved significant liaison with the local government and regulatory authorities and has proven to be of great benefit to both the owners and local government.
Specialist Consultancy Services
SES UK developed a regional damage assessment protocol in the Middle East which has been approved by the International Oil Pollution Compensation (IOPC) Fund.
SES UK has worked with a major client to prove that a mystery pollution incident was vessel-related and therefore subject to a claim from the IOPC Fund. The work was successful and a sizeable sum has been claimed by the authorities which will go a long way to offsetting the costs incurred during the clean up.
